Colourpop haul + swatches!

If you read even one beauty blog, or watch just one beauty YouTuber, and that's all you ever dip your toes in to the beauty world... I'm betting you've still heard of ColourPop. I feel like I can't click around the internet without seeing it just about everywhere. And while sometimes that much hype can be suspect and not to be trusted, believe me when I say that this whole ColourPop phenomenon is SO worth every bit of hype.

I caved recently to see what all the fuss was about, and oh my gosh, you guys... I wish I would have bought even more! I purchased 4 eyeshadows and 2 lippie stix and I've got swatches of it all for you!

Where do I even begin with these eyeshadows? For starters... each one of these is just $5. Yes.... FIVE DOLLARS. I was pleasantly surprised when I rubbed my finger in my first one, too - it has the most bizarre consistency that I wasn't expecting at all! It's sort of a bouncy cream powder. It doesn't apply wet at all, but it's certainly not your typical powder eyeshadow. You have to make sure to seal these babies up tight when you're done using them though, otherwise they will lose that bouncy goodness and dry out on you. These are so easy to work with, they blend like a charm, and they have excellent lasting power. 

 I am honestly going to buy so many more colors before ColourPop realizes they should be charging way more than $5 per shadow, because I have a feeling that day will come now that they're becoming more established.

Bill is a matte plum-pink shade, perfect for defining your crease line. Downtown is a matte taupe brown. Girl Crush is described as a mid-tone matte gray, however to me it looks purple? And I Heart This is a silvery taupe with multi-colored glitter.

The two lippie stix I got are Bichette, a matte deep red wine color, and Fetch, a mid-tone pink with a satin finish. I absolutely adore Bichette, but I don't know how I feel about Fetch on my skin tone. Either way, these have excellent color pay off and staying power, but they can be a little drying so you may need a gloss after you use these.

I'm completely enamored with ColourPop. It's taking all of my willpower not place another order right this second, that's how good it all is. I can't remember the last time I've been this excited about a makeup brand, but mark my words.... you'll be hearing a LOT about ColourPop from here forward. So so good.

May Empties (#14)

Another month, another batch of empties. It feels like each month my bag fills up quicker and my sense of accomplishment knows no bounds. Here's what I finished over the last month....

• Tresemme Platinum Strength Shampoo & Conditioner (would repurchase)  - These massive bottles took me ages to go through. They smelled nice and made my hair soft, but I got quite sick of them towards the end. I didn't notice my hair seeming any stronger, but I liked these nonetheless. In the future, I'd buy smaller bottles. 

• eva nyc Freshen Up Dry Shampoo (would not repurchase) - This smelled really great, but it didn't do the best job of keeping me oil free or giving me a boost of volume. I will continue to stick to my tried and true, Batiste. 

• NIP + FAB Yoga Blend Body Wash (would repurchase) - This smelled really good, but I think it's sort of an acquired scent. This bottle took ages to use up, so again, I got a bit sick of it at the end (I like change!) but it was nice and made my skin fresh and clean. 

• Boots Cocoa Butter Body Wash (would repurchase) - This is my last little bottle of Boots body wash, which you've seen sprinkled in many of my empties posts. I love these body washes, they smell amazing and don't dry my skin out. And I'm sure you can imagine just how amazing the cocoa butter scent smells!

• Korres Body Butter in Jasmine (would not repurchase) - The Korres body butters are quite hydrating and nice to use, but I have yet to find a scent I truly adore. Jasmine wasn't for me, but it wasn't bad. It smelled fresh and floral and it kept my skin hydrated.

• Dickinson's Pore Perfecting Toner (would repurchase) - This is a really nice, gentle toner. Witch Hazel has many beneficial properties for the skin, plus it's all natural. I am sure this toner will make a reappearance in my skincare lineup again in the future.

• Michael Todd Charcoal Detox Cleanser (would repurchase) - I did a full review of this product here.

• Hydraluron (would repurchase) - This is a well loved, and mega-hyped skincare product that has a high dosage of hyaluronic acid to plump the skin. I thought this was a nice lightweight serum to use both day and night. See more of my thoughts on this here.

• Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser (would not repurchase) - I know people go apeshit over this cleanser, but I can't say I loved it. It was fine... it removed my makeup and didn't leave any nasty film behind, but I could only massage it so far in to my skin before it sort of stuck and I didn't like that. I just didn't think it was as amazing as I was led to believe it is. 

• Essence All About Matt Powder (would repurchase) - This was a nice translucent powder that performed really well for the cost! This is like $3 at Ulta and it lasted me a long time and did a good job of keeping oil at bay.

• Dolce & Gabana Desire Perfume (would not purchase) - A nice scent, but nothing I absolutely need in my collection.

• Burt's Bees Lip Treatment with Kokum Butter (would not repurchase) - This was the worst lip balm I've tried in a long time. It just sits on the lips and doesn't moisturize at all.

• L'Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara (would repurchase) - I love this mascara. It's a tried and true, buy it again and again mascara. It gives great volume and length and this won't be my last tube. 

• Wet n Wild Color Icon Brow Pencil in Taupe (would repurchase) - This brow pencil is a perfect color match for me. It's just creamy enough and it's super cheap. I've already got a backup of this but I'll buy it again for sure.

• Tarte Maracuja Creasless Concealer (would not repurchase) - I used to love this concealer when I had bad acne because it covers anything. But now that my acne has cleared, this is way too thick for under my eyes (it definitely creases) and I don't need it for spots anymore. I do have one more tube of it, but it'll be a long time before you see that guy in my empties. 

• Molton Brown Pink Peppered Body Wash (would repurchase) - This smells really peppery and nice. I brought this on a couple vacations with me so I have great memories tied to this scent - I'll want it again for sure!

• eos Lip Balm in Honeysuckle Honeydew (would not repurchase) - I feel SO accomplished for using this up. I think the eos lip balms are entirely overrated and not very hydrating so I won't be buying this again. 

• Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Buttercream (would repurchase) - This smells SO amazing, like a key lime pie, and it's really moisturizing. This is a favorite of mine. 

• Benefit Stay Flawless 15-hour Primer (would not repurchase) - This was just a sample, but I got many uses out of it. I didn't notice this doing a whole lot to keep my makeup in tact. It was OK, but not worth the price. 

• LOVE Shampoo by Davines (would not repurchase) - I took this shampoo traveling and got many uses out of this sample size. It smelled nice, but wasn't anything special. It's expensive and I wouldn't shell the cash out for it.

• Up & Up Cosmetic Wedges (would repurchase) - My tried and true favorite way to apply my makeup is a simple latex-free cosmetic wedge. The original beauty blender!

• Karuna Hydrating Treatment Mask (would not repurchase) - Karuna masks are pricey, and this wasn't worth the money. It had a backing to it so the sheet mask stayed in form until I applied it to my face, which I appreciated, but this mask left my face sticky and I think it broke me out a bit, too.

• Swisspers Cotton Rounds (would repurchase) - Still working my way through this massive box of cotton rounds from Costco. It's super economical to buy them from Costco, and these are quite good, so I'll buy these again when I finally run out!

• Yves Rocher Micellar Cleansing Water (would repurchase) - This was my first foray in to the micellar cleansing water world. This worked really well to remove all of my makeup, plus it was affordable, and it didn't break me out. 

• Colgate Optic White Platinum (would repurchase) - It's just toothpaste.... I didn't notice my teeth were any whiter, but they felt clean so I'd buy it again. 

• Suave Moroccan Infusion Body Lotion (would repurchase) - I used this as a hand lotion and it made my hands soft without being greasy. It smelled nice, too. 

• Beauty Secrets Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover (would not repurchase) - This is the Sally beauty brand of nail polish remover. Despite it being way worse for your nails, I much prefer acetone remover and I'll only purchase that from now on.

• Zarbees Naturals Elderberry Gummies (would repurchase) - I like these and I honestly think they keep a cold at bay when I feel one coming on. 

• Chesapeake Bay Candle in Hinoki Bonsai (would not repurchase) - I got this ages ago on sale on Kohl's for next to nothing. It smelled OK but it didn't have great scent throw. 

• Better Homes & Gardens Wax Cubes in French Lilac Flowers (would repurchase) - These smelled just like fresh lilacs and made my home smell great. I love wax cubes and these were really nice.

• B&BW candle in Sparkling Limeade (would repurchase) - How cute is the mini mason jar? This smelled good, but not really like limeade. I don't know what it does smell like, but it's not quite limeade to me.

Trilane Retinol + Vitamin C Anti-Aging Moisturizer

I may only be in my mid 20's, but I am ever on the hunt for great anti-aging products for my skin. It's never too early to jump on the prevention train! I was recently sent an anti-aging moisturizer from Trilane formulated with retinol and vitamin C - both powerhouse ingredients for keeping skin healthy and looking fresh. 

Retinol (a fancy name for vitamin A), protects from free-radical damage and increases collagen in the skin. Vitamin C, which also protects against free-radical damage and boosts collagen production, helps fade sun spots and discoloration and reduces inflammation and irritation. Both ingredients are amazing to have in your skincare lineup.

This Trilane moisturizer surprised me because it goes on like an oil, and doesn't dry my skin out -- which is often a concern when using retinols. Just one pump of this moisturizer is all you need. I used this primarily at night as it took quite a long time to sink in to my skin. I really don't think this would sit well under makeup. 

It's hard to say if this has done wonders for my skin after only using this for about 2 weeks. I think it's hard to notice a difference with ANY anti-aging products when you're using them mostly for prevention. But all in all, this has been a nice switch in my nightly skincare routine. I'm sure I will use this bottle all up! My only gripe is how long it takes to soak in to my skin, but other than that - it's all good!

Here's what came in May's Glam Bag....

• Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Lip Pencil in Ozone - This is a clear lip liner that is meant to prime the lips and latch on to any color you apply over it. I have yet to put it to the test but I'm looking forward to giving it a go. 

• Luxie Beauty Tapered Blending Eye Brush 205 - I've never heard of this brand, but I've already tried out this brush and it is wonderful. It retails for $12 on the Luxie Beauty website, so this product alone costs more than the Ipsy bag! Good value indeed.

• Bare Republic Naturals SPF 30 Mineral Face Sunscreen Lotion - Another brand I've never heard of. This sunscreen is lightly tinted, has no chemical additives, synthetic fragrances or parabens.

• NUXE Reve de Miel Facial Cleansing and Makeup Removing Gel - The Reve de Miel lip balm has a cult following, but this product is totally new to me. This cleanser is soap free and soothing with sunflower and honey. 

• BellaPierre Cosmetics Waterproof Mineral Gel Eyeliner Pencil - This stuff is serious business. I swatched it on my hand and it stayed put all day and all night, and even through a shower. A hair washing shower, no less!!! I don't typically like pencil liners for my upper eyelid, but I used this and I actually really love it. Make sure you have a good waterproof eye makeup remover to get this stuff off!

Zoya Earth Day Haul!

Zoya is my all time favorite nail polish brand so it was a total no brainer to take part in their Earth Day promotion this year. From left to right, I purchased Leslie, Kiki and Charisma. Leslie is a beautiful pastel lavender with a turquoise metallic shimmer. It's the only polish I've tried so far - see below for how gorgeous it is. It's hard to capture that turquoise flash on camera!

Kiki is a hot pink with blue duochrome glitter and silver shimmer. Zoya's shimmer polishes are unlike any other I've tried - they're absolutely gorgeous. And lastly, Charisma is a neon purple matte.

The last three, from left to right, are Brittany, Miley and Blu. If you look up swatches of Brittany, you'll see why I bought it. It's a beautiful rosey nude satin. Miley is a light purple creme that is perfect for the spring and summer. And lastly, Blu is a pale baby blue creme. Cremes are my favorite - can you tell?

MEMEBOX Pony Shine Easy Glam 3 Eyeshadow + Blossom Lipstick

MEMEBOX has been on a serious roll with bomb ass eyeshadow palettes. Say hello to their latest palette collab with Pony, the self-taught Korean makeup artist, popular YouTuber, and the 2011 "Makeup Artist of the Year" award. There are three beautiful palettes, and a handful of lipsticks but I have just 2 from the line to show you. 

First off, how stunning is that packaging? I love the white and gold mix - it looks so classy and expensive! But don't worry - it's all quite affordable! The eyeshadow quad is just $18, and the lipstick is just $12.

I received the Orange Blossom palette, which has gorgeous orange hues for the spring season. The formula is really silky and easy to apply. They blend well and you can create some gorgeous looks that range from neutral to bold - whatever your preference may be. I have very fair skin and these colors are very complementary to my skin tone and auburn hair, but I can imagine that these shades would be equally flattering on darker skin tones as well.

The top shades, L to R are named Glam Nude Orange, and Glam Fair Orange. The bottom shades, L to R are named Shine Orange Brown, and Shine Copper Brown. All the shades have hints of shimmer and Glam Fair Orange is straight up glitter but it is absolutely gorgeous and wearable both day and night. I've worn it to work without looking crazy!

The lipstick, in the shade Blooming Love, surprised me. It looked like it was going to be very pigmented, but when I put it on it's just a sheer wash of color. I absolutely love the look! The formula reminds me a lot of the Maybelline Color Whispers. They're not super hydrating and they don't last very long, but it's a good "throw in your purse" color for use on the go.

These products are great for any level of makeup expertise - whether you're a beginner or a professional makeup artist, I think people of all experience levels would find these easy and enjoyable to use. Burnin' Up #7: Frostbeard Studio Candles + Tarts

If you're a lover of curling up with a good book with a cozy candle flickering nearby, you need Frostbeard Studios in your life. They bring the scents you've loved to read about to life in the form of soy candles and wax tarts. They're based out of Minneapolis, MN (holla - shop local!!) and literally everything they make is so.much.fun. -- not to mention it all smells amazing. I picked up a few things for myself and for my mom for mother's day and I thought I'd share with you what I got!

Both my mom and I love burning wax tarts to make our home smell nice, so for her I picked up Old Books (she's also a big reader). It has a nice sweet, book smell. It's not exactly how I think old books smell, but I don't think I want that exact smell wafting through my home anyway... (musty?? no thanks) but it does conjure up the image of an old library and cozy reading. 

For myself, I got Gatsby's Mansion (The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite stories of all time). This has a fresh, floral spring scent. It's not overwhelming, just really nice and light. I also picked up The Shire, because I'm a big LOTR fan. This has sort of a perfume-y fresh scent - and it's much sweeter than Gatsby's Mansion. I prefer this scent out of the three. 

I've burned both of my tarts so far - they don't have the best scent throw but I still love them because they're unique and not what you typically find in stores.

Lastly, I got a Headmaster's Office candle for myself, and the tarts for my mom. I love love love this scent, nearly as much as I love Harry Potter, for which I assume this is named! This has a musky scent, with hints of tobacco, vanilla and maybe even books? I tend toward spicy, smokey scents, and if you do, too - this will be right up your alley. 

Not only are the scents amazing, but I love the cute packaging, and the appeal to book lovers. Supporting small business is awesome and you can feel good about purchasing from Frostbeard Studios - you won't regret a thing! Highly recommend their amazing candles + tarts!

NEW goodies from Covergirl!

Covergirl is probably my favorite drugstore brand. They're foundations are my fave (specifically this one) and the quality of their products always seems to exceed what you'd typically expect from the drugstore. They've got 2 brand new products, and as you can guess ... they're both fab. 

The Intensify Me! Eyeliner by Lashblast is an interesting new liquid eyeliner pen, supposedly aimed at making cat eyes a breeze. It has a paddle-shaped tip that's unlike anything I've ever used. You can use this to get two totally different looks - thick and dramatic or thin and elegant. It applies really dark black with a semi-shiny finish. I personally prefer a long, thin tipped eyeliner pen, but this is easy to get the hang of and you can certainly achieve whatever eyeliner look you like best with this pen.

The real star is the Super Sizer Mascara, which is easily my new favorite drugstore mascara. This stuff is AMAZING. This has a really interesting thin tapered plastic brush, which makes it easy to comb the product from root to tip. It gives instant volume, length and separation. It reminds me a lot of the L'Oreal Telescopic Masacara, in fact I think this is probably Covergirl's response to the overwhelming love of the Telescopic line. It takes just 2 coats for complete and even coverage. And the kicker? I got asked if I was wearing falsies while wearing this mascara. Ugh.... I love it. 

These are two really awesome additions to the Covergirl line. If you're going to grab anything, pick up the Super Sizer Mascara -- I promise you won't regret it. Or if you're an eyeliner junkie who loves to experiment, you won't be disappointed by the Intensify Me eyeliner at all.

My current skincare routine | Spring 2015

It's been a while since I've done a post like this, so I thought I'd take a minute and update you on what skincare products I've been using and loving lately. Personally, I love seeing what products other people use and enjoy when it comes to skincare, so I hope you do, too!

MORNING: In the mornings, I rotate between two products.Every other day, I start with the Michael Todd Charcoal Detox Deep Pore Gel Cleanser. I swear by Michael Todd skincare; I've used a handful of their products and my skin really responds well to their natural products. 

The Charcoal Detox cleanser is a scary black-colored gel, but it smells so refreshing like tea tree and other natural fragrances. The charcoal works to pull out the junk from clogged pores, and the tea tree has natural anti-aging and blemish healing properties. I love this stuff, I already have a backup to use in the future. On the days I don't use the cleanser, I use the Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal facial scrub. It's really good for your skin to properly exfoliate and remove the dry, dead skin that can hang around. The exfoliating agent is wax jojoba beads that are perfectly round and even. I can't stress to you how important that is - scrubs like the St. Ives Apricot Scrub use uneven natural exfoliators that can cause damaging micro-lacerations on your skin. Not. Good. (even though I secretly love that scrub even though I know it's bad for me!) Again, like with the cleanser above, the activated charcoal works to draw out impurities and gunk from the skin - a double whammy when used in rotation with the Charcoal Detox cleanser. After cleansing, I tone my skin using the Kiehl's Yerba Mate Tea toner (cue the Ellis Coffee song running through my head! Holla if you know the song!) This is a really nice, gentle toner that doesn't sting my face or strip it of it's natural moisture. I THINK this might be discontinued.... so I'm sorry in advance if you can't find this for purchase any more. 

To cap off the morning routine, I use a serum and I've recently been using the beloved Hydraluron, which you've probably read about if you frequent British beauty blogs often. It's a lightweight serum formulated with the purest form of hyaluronic acid, which plumps and promotes smoother, softer skin. You can buy it at both Ulta or Walgreens in the US if you want to see what the hype is all about.

EVENING: In the evening I first remove all my makeup with a towelette or a micellar water, as well as an eye-makeup remover, and then I use the Michael Todd Charcoal Detox Cleanser with my Clarisonic Mia 2 (just re-read the description above about how amazing this cleanser is.)

After cleansing, I again, use my Kiehl's Yerba Mate Tea toner to remove any lingering traces of makeup. I then use the Lanoline Age Defying eye cream. This isn't my favorite eye cream ever, but it's not bad and I'm weird about needing to use things up. Once again, I use hydraluron in the evenings for a serum. To moisturize, I use the Tarte Maracuja Oil every other day. I love this oil because it has a high dose of Vitamin C to brighten the skin, plus it helps combat blemishes while really hydrating the skin.On the days I don't use the oil, I use the Organic Surge Overnight Sensation Night Cream. This stuff smells amazing, with a strong smell of lavender essential oil - perfect for bed time! A little goes a long way, and it makes my skin feel nice and hydrated.


And that, ladies and gentlemen, is it! This combination of products has been working really well for me to keep most blemishes and dry patches away. My skin feels soft and I feel like I've been focusing less on fine lines that are beginning to appear on my face. NEW Chirp Cosmetics | Initial product line review

Chirp Cosmetics is a new cosmetics company based out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario offering gorgeous makeup that is made in small batches by a husband/wife team! All the ingredients in Chirp's packaging and products are sourced from North American suppliers and they actually make everything they sell (down to the packaging!) All products have a natural or mineral base -- which you know I love! So of course, I couldn't wait to try these goodies out. 

There are eyeshadows, lip colors, lip tints, blushes and a finishing powder and I've got them all for you! Let's start with eyeshadows....

As you can see, I was sent testers of all the shadows (above) - they certainly don't come packaged that way, but I have many more uses out of these even after swatching and testing these. All of these shadows are loose powder and made from high-quality base ingredients. There are SO many beautiful colors that pack a pigmented punch. They're buttery and easy to work with. It's not often I want to own every.single.product in a line... but I want full sizes of all of these! For reference, all swatches were done over Urban Decay's primer potion.

Next up is lipstick. Nearly all of these have some sort of shimmer in them, which isn't typically my style, but I actually found some within this line that I really want to get a full-size of and change up my collection with some lippies that are out of left field for me. All of these are crafted with a natural base, they smooth on nicely, they're comfortable on the lips and can be built up to as va-va-voom as you want to be.

Pixie (Pearlescent nude -- great for fair gals like me!)

Lastly in the collection are blushes. To be quite honest, all of these are a bit too shimmery for my taste. I like a dewy looking cheek, but these are jam packed with shimmer and pigment. But just because these aren't my style, doesn't mean that they are bad - because they're certainly not! The formulation is lovely and the soft, loose powder makes for easy blending. Check 'em out. OH, and I didn't do a swatch of the transparent face powder. It's a bit too white for my taste, but again, try it out for yourself. You can get sample sizes on the Chirp Cosmetics website.

I have to say, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I received my package from Chirp Cosmetics, but I am so pleasantly surprised. I have a handful of things I definitely want to order in full-size, and the best part is that each product is really affordable.... I'm talking $10 and under! I highly recommend checking their products out - they do offer sample sizes for order on their website if you want to test the waters first.
